Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on 9 August 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and the cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. In Newark Whitney started singing in the church choir in the early years of her childhood. When she was 15 years old, she joined her mother in singing background vocals on Chaka's hit Im Every Woman from 1978. She continued to offer backing vocals for Lou Rawls, Jermaine & Jackson as well as her own mother. She also worked briefly as a model appearing on the front cover of Seventeen magazine in 1981. The quality of her work as the lead vocalist in New York funk group Material attracted the attention of several big record labels like Arista, with which she signed in 1982 and remained for the remainder of her career. Whitney Houston's debut Whitney Houston album was released in the year 1985. It became one of the best-selling albums of an artist. Three of her singles, Saving My Love To You, How Can I Tell You're Giving Good Love and the greatest Love of All came from the album. The songs contributed to Houston to achieve an all-time high of seven US top tens, which surpassed even the Beatles. Album sold in US 3,000,000 copies before it increased to 25,000,000 copies world-wide. The album earned her the first in the six Grammys she has won. The Whitney sequel in 1987, featuring the singles Where Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to further build upon the success of her debut album. But it was, the 1992 movie The Bodyguard that solidified her standing as an artist with the highest sales. The movie and her role in it was not popular, however the soundtrack and her rendition to Dolly's I Will Always Love You were charted for months on the charts and she sold over 44 million singles and albums worldwide. It was also in 1993 when she was married to Bobby Brown, an ex-New Edition singer and father of the sole child of her marriage, Bobbi Kristina Brown.
